Naxos (448 qkm - 15.000 inhabitants) is the largest and most beautiful cyclades island, which has to offer something for each holiday-maker: kilometer-long sand dune beaches, innumerable Byzantine monasteries and churches as well as a landscape, which in-load to extensive walks. The island is quite mountainous and has with that ZAS (1.001 meters) the highest mountain of the Cyclades. The whole west coast from Naxos city to the south point offers numerous beautiful sand beaches (z.B. Mikri Vigla, Kastraki, Aliko and Agiassos). In addition, north of Naxos city there are some beaches. Despite the many beautiful beaches Naxos remained still another relatively calm island and it gives no mass tourism. Most inhabitants of the island lives in Naxos city or in the fruitful northern half of the island. Naxos city (Chora called) is a typical Cyclades small town with approx. 5.000 inhabitants. Here also the majority of the tourists lives in the summer. Close lanes and many stages lead up to the Venetian castel with several manor-houses, from which one enjoys a beautiful view. North of Naxos city that stands for the port mole 6 meters high temple gate from that 6. Century before Christi (particularly beautiful with a sunset). To the further objects of interest the church Panagia Drossiani from that belong to the island 6. Jh. with Moni, the mountain villages Apirathos and Koronos as well as the monasteries Moni Faneromenis and Panagia Ipsilotera. Airline connection exists several times daily from and to Athens. Ferry connections are there for example with Piraeus, Rafina, Mykonos, Tinos, Andros, Paros, Ios, Santorin and Crete.
